    Education Specialist – High School and Post-Secondary

    As such, NAC is looking for a creative problem solver to join a fun, hardworking team as an Education Specialist for High School and Post-Secondary clients who will support NAC families in their participation in wide-ranging school/schooling related matters and in community-support opportunities.

    Additionally, the Education Specialist will assist in the development and delivery of opportunities related to the promotion of caregiver and student self-advocacy and empowerment.

    • Title of Position: Education Specialist High School and Post-Secondary
    • Position Type: Exempt/Full-time, 35 hours M-F
    • Location: 37 West 26th Street 6th Floor, New York, NY 10010

    Description of Responsibilities:

    • Primary responsibility is to support NAC families in accessing appropriate educational and developmental supports and services.
    • Participate in the creation of service plans with specific goals and objectives for youth and family.
    • Liaise with school staff and city agency officials and offices to ensure school/program compliance with federal, state and city laws and regulations.
    • Work with teachers and service providers on matters of academic support and related services.
    • Participate in NAC case conferences, school visits, classroom observations, IEP meetings, and other meetings, as necessary.
    • Serve as a resource to NAC social workers/case and care managers, as well as, to caregivers and youth in providing technical assistance and guidance with educational matters.
    • Collaborate with colleagues within the education department and with colleagues from other NAC departments including medical and mental health, transportation, and recreation on a variety of projects and problem solving efforts.
    • Assist with and/or facilitate NAC-based programming for youth and family, presentations to staff, and education-focused workshops.
    • Collaborate on grant reporting, grant applications, and other funding opportunities.
    • Manage caseload data
    • Prompt submission of progress and case notes
    • Maintenance of billable hours

    *Please note, NAC education staff is currently operating on a hybrid schedule—part remote, part in-person. Most in-person activity, in recent months, has been limited to school visits, home visits, and group outings. In-office presence has largely been “as needed” or if preferred to working remotely/from home. We anticipate, in the coming months, that NAC staff will begin to increase its in-person work particularly around school visits, IEP meetings, and classroom observations, and that more in-office time will be required but that has yet to be determined.  

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Master’s Degree in any relevant field
    • Bachelor’s Degree with 2-3 years of relevant experience.
    • Knowledge of Federal, State, and City regulations concerning schools and special education.
    • Knowledge of and/or experience with the New York City public school system and/or service providers a plus.

    Required Skills:

    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent written and oral skills.
    • Willingness to travel throughout NYC, as needed
    • Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
