    Postdoctoral Psychologist

    < Back to all jobs

    New Alternatives for Children (NAC) is currently seeking to hire two postdoctoral psychologists for the 2023-24 academic year. This position is designed for a license-eligible psychologist to gain supervised practice in a multifaceted child welfare setting, providing clinical services to individuals across the lifespan.

    The postdoctoral psychologist is incorporated into the psychology department of NAC’s Mental Health department, located at 37 W.26th Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10010. (We will soon be moving to a new office in Midtown Manhattan, 53rd Street at 7th Ave.) There are opportunities to work in the satellite clinic in the Bronx, 1775 Grand Concourse, Bronx NY 10453, if desired. The psychology team is currently staffed by 4 licensed psychologists.

    Currently staff within the mental health clinic are working within a hybrid model due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a combination of in person and remote work. The postdoc would be expected to work in person from the NAC Manhattan office at least three days per week, and possibly more depending on the status of the COVID positivity rate.

    Description of Responsibilities:

    The position is structured to provide the incoming postdoctoral psychologist with a balance of clinical service provision, consultation to other professionals within the agency, supervision and training. Clinical experiences may be tailored to the expertise and interest of the postdoctoral psychologist. The postdoctoral psychologist:

    • Provides individual, family, and collateral psychotherapy sessions to children, adolescents and adults in NAC’s Mental Health Clinic;
    • Provides psychological and developmental evaluations;
    • Participates in NAC’s Building Blocks parent-child bonding program, providing dyadic therapy using a mentalization-based treatment modality;
    • Conducts intake assessments and diagnostic interviews;
    • Completes required documentation including progress notes and treatment plans;
    • Acts as a mental health consultant to staff within NAC’s child welfare programs (i.e. Prevention and Foster Care);
    • Provides supervision to psychology trainees under the oversight of licensed psychologists;
    • Participates as part of the Psychology Training Committee (i.e. takes part in psychology internship and externship recruitment, evaluation of trainees, evaluation of the internship/externship programs, etc.);
    • Provides didactic training to psychology trainees and/or to NAC staff.
    • Receives approximately two hours of supervision weekly provided by licensed psychologists, one hour provided by a senior staff psychologist, and one hour provided by psychological consultants to the Building Blocks program.
    • Participates in bi-monthly group supervision with licensed psychologists at NAC.

    Eligibility

    • PhD or PsyD in clinical, school or counseling psychology
    • Candidates for the post-doctoral psychologist position must have completed the course of study and dissertation defense in an APA-accredited PhD or PsyD doctoral program in clinical, counseling or school psychology and completed a Psychology Internship Program.
    • Candidates must be eligible for the NYS Limited Permit in Psychology.

    This is a one year position, from September 2023 through August 2024. The postdoctoral psychologist will be provided with benefits, vacation days, sick days, and personal days. The salary is $50,000 per annum with competitive fringe benefits. The postdoctoral psychologist responsibilities and supervision will fulfill criteria for the postdoctoral year of experience necessary for NYS Psychology licensure.

    • Candidates should have some experience working with populations that represent a range of backgrounds and clinical presentations, and should have some experience with children and families.
    • Assessment experience should include psychological testing.
    • Priority will be given to candidates familiar with administration of the ADOS-2 or other autism assessment measures.
