New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award-winning not-for-profit agency in Midtown Manhattan that is dedicated to serving children with special healthcare needs and their families. To assist in achieving this mission, NAC is currently seeking a Van Driver to join its Transportation team.

The Van Driver supports the agency by transporting clients to and from program related activities, including family visits in the Foster Care Program, diversified recreation activities, groups and special events. They will become familiar and knowledgeable about the organization, the function of each department, and related policies and procedures. This position supports NAC.’s mission to provide the highest quality of care by complying with regulatory guidelines and meeting child welfare industry standards. Reporting to the Transportation Director, the Van Driver will be responsible for the following: a). Providing safe and efficient transportation for NAC staff and clients. b). Providing a consistently high-quality support service. c). Collaborating with Transportation Director and Fleet Supervisor to manage vehicle and d). Promoting and maintaining full cooperation and professionalism with team members, staff from other departments, and all NAC clientele.

Description of Responsibilities:

• Transports agency staff and medically fragile and physically disabled children and their household members in agency vehicles to NAC and other locations as needed. Drivers transport no more than 15 individuals maximum on the van at one time.•Maintains van in good working condition – conducts regular inspections and seek repairs and maintenance as needed. Ensures that the van is clean and safe. Keeps van properly stocked with fully functioning seat-belts, tie-downs, car seats, first-aid kit, maps and a fire extinguisher.•Parks van in a safe and secure location within 1 mile of home location, or in designated parking facility if necessary. Supervises van as needed.
• Coordinates with supervisor and family support staff to organize transportation of agency staff and/or medically fragile children and their families.
• Must operate and maintain equipment in a safe manner at all time, must have knowledge of the geography of all five boroughs of New York City and efficiency in choosing quickest and safest routes when transporting children and staff.
• Requires prolonged sitting while on vans, and an ability to work in severe weather conditions (both heat and cold).
• Ability and willingness to work primarily afternoon and evening hours on weekdays, and daytime hours on Saturdays. Work schedule fluctuates depending on the needs of clients and the schedule of services provided to them.
• Performs additional responsibilities in accordance with agency needs
  Required Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of defensive driving classes preferred but not required.
• Minimum of three consecutive years with a clean license.
• Three to five years of experience transporting individuals with disabilities or medical conditions preferred. Commercial Driver’s License CDL is a plus.
• One year of experience working with children and/or older individuals with disabilities or medical conditions, etc. is preferred.
• Ability to use email and text messaging on cellular phones. Adept at programming and following instructions of GPS navigation system.

Required Skills:

• Ability and willingness to work primarily afternoon and evening hours on weekdays, and daytime hours on Saturdays. Work schedule fluctuates depending on the needs of clients and the schedule of services provided to them.
• Ability and interest in working with a multi-disciplinary staff.
• Ability to read and write in English. Ability to communicate in additional languages a plus.
• CPR and first aid training are required prior to or immediately following employment.
• NYC residency required for business purposes.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly.
