Professional Training
Trainings Offered at NAC
The Professional Trainings and Development offered at NAC are an integral part of our mission to provide the best possible care to medically complex children and their families involved in the child welfare system. Many of the children and parents served by NAC have experienced trauma and other complex psychosocial challenges. Our in-service training is critical to the ongoing development of NAC staff, and to their ability to learn the latest best practices to effectively impact the growing and changing needs of NAC’s children and families. Â
See below for the different training series offered at NAC.
Friday Morning Child Welfare Series
The Friday Morning Child Welfare Series is a monthly training series to enhance NAC’s practice serving children and families. The Series offers a mixture of expert internal and external trainers with topics ranging from Attachment Theory, Complex Trauma, The ABCs of Behavior, Basic Psychopharmacology and Internal Family Systems Theory.Â
NAC is a NYS approved provider of CEs for LMSW and LCSWs and the majority of the trainings in this series meet the criteria for CEs.
The Mental Health Discussion Series
The Mental Health Discussion Series hosts monthly trainings throughout the academic year that are open to all staff at NAC. Mental Health experts, many of whom are on NAC’s staff, present on a variety of topics related to clinical work with clients and families. Social Work continuing education credits are available for eligible participants. The series aims to explore many aspects of direct practice, including, but not limited to, various clinical theories, approaches, and interventions, working with specific populations or diagnoses, and managing vicarious trauma.
NAC is a NYS approved provider of CEs for LMSW and LCSWs and the majority of the trainings in this series meet the criteria for CEs.
Social Justice Discussion Series
The Social Justice Discussion Series is a monthly internal series of discussions focusing on social justice issues. This series was born out of NAC’s desire to provide a place to process current events and social injustice. Since its inception in November 2018, we have covered topics ranging from Becoming an Anti-Racist Multicultural Organization, Voter Suppression, White Fragility, Transphobia and Ableism. NAC’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Committee organizes the series and NAC staff are required to take a minimum number of hours of training per year that focuses on DEIB issues.
Graduate Student Training Program
The Professional Training offered to our Graduate Students is a required component of the Internship. NAC’s Internship Program is committed to arming students with the diagnostic tools, knowledge and skills which will enhance and strengthen their work with our clients in order to meet the pressing needs and social issues that impact the lives of our families and to think creatively about the delivery of effectual services. Throughout the academic year, the following workshops are a few examples of the monthly trainings that we offer: Introduction to Child Welfare, Complex Trauma, Attachment Theory, Suicide Risk Assessment: Safety, Planning and Treatment, Working with a LGBTQ+ Population, Working with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Population, and Termination with NAC Clients.
